War Affects Birth Rates in Armenia

Demographer Ruben Yeganian stated in an interview with 24News that one of the main reasons for the decline in birth rates in Armenia is the war, which has disrupted the gender balance. According to him, this was predictable given the current situation in the country, and this trend is expected to continue as the number of potential fathers has decreased.

Referring to official data, it was noted that according to a statement from a social security ministry employee, the birth rate was stable from 2018 to 2023, with around 36,000 births per year. However, starting in 2024, this number has dropped to approximately 34,000. The statistics for the first nine months of 2025 were also found to be concerning.

Yeganian mentioned that negative dynamics in birth rates have also been influenced by sex-selective abortions, as well as the prevailing socio-psychological atmosphere in the country. "The prevailing atmosphere in the country is not very favorable for people to want to have many children. Another factor affecting the rate is economic. I do not expect that birth rates will stabilize in the coming years, let alone increase," he said.

When asked about possible state actions, the demographer responded that it is difficult to specify what should be done. He stated that there is no clear prescription, and while there is much to be done, there are currently no real opportunities to change the situation.
