Germany Promises Turkey New Opportunity for EU Membership
Germany's Foreign Minister Johan Wadephul has offered Turkey a new opportunity to join the European Union, as reported by Handelsblatt.
"It is time to open a new chapter," Wadephul stated at a joint press conference in Berlin with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan. According to Wadephul, Turkey has become a "key partner" in many sectors. He also reminded of Turkey’s role in the conflicts in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip.
Fidan, in turn, emphasized during the press conference that the EU remains Turkey's strategic goal, and "Ankara will strive to meet all necessary requirements." He added that the EU criteria for accepting member states are not an issue.
"The rules of the game must be respected," Fidan stated. At the same time, he noted that negotiations are currently at a standstill, and it is necessary to revisit these issues and regulate the relations between the EU and Turkey.
