Tourist Dies Following Shark Attack: Details
A tourist from Switzerland has died due to a shark attack near a well-known surfing spot on the eastern coast of Australia, while another tourist has sustained serious injuries, reports Reuters.
The New South Wales Police have stated that the shark bit two individuals. The woman, believed to be around 20 years old, died at the scene, while the man, also believed to be in his 20s, was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.
Police Chief Inspector Timothy Bailey announced at a press conference that the victims were acquainted with each other. The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that both individuals are Swiss citizens. “One Swiss citizen has died, and another Swiss national has been injured,” the statement reads.
The Swiss Consulate General in Sydney has been in contact with local authorities and is providing support to the victims' families, the statement added.
The attack reportedly occurred at Long Reef Beach, located north of Sydney, where just two months prior, a shark had killed a man engaged in surfing.
