Concept of Air Corridors in Yerevan's Master Plan: Sirarpi Haykazyan
In Yerevan, the reasons for air pollution are varied—an increasing number of vehicles, mining operations, reduction of green areas over the years, fires, burning of grassy areas and dried leaves, construction, and more.
At a press conference held in the Armenpress press hall, Sirarpi Haykazyan, the head of the Environmental Protection Department of the Yerevan City Hall, noted that in recent times, numerous and multifaceted measures are being implemented in several directions.
“It is concerning to see the burning of organic waste, especially dried leaves. I must say that a change will soon occur, wherein the Yerevan City Hall will implement oversight in this regard. I should also mention that as a pilot program, we have established 15 points for collecting organic waste in Davtashen in collaboration with our French partners. By working with the public, we aim to collect organic waste, including leaves, which will be transported to the ‘Greening and Environmental Protection’ State Non-Commercial Organization, where it will be composted. This will serve as a good fertilizer,” stated Sirarpi Haykazyan.
The representative of the Yerevan City Hall reported that around 58 hectares have been added to green areas. He noted that work has now begun to establish a new forest over an area of approximately 8.5 hectares near the Nubarashen landfill. In the near future, they plan to establish a forest park over 230 hectares near Dalma.
“By the mayor's directive, we need to devise and integrate the concept of air corridors into the city’s master plan by spring, which will ensure air circulation within the city. Additionally, I want to mention that there is a benefit for electric vehicles regarding parking fees in the city. In the near future, transport will be supplemented with electric vehicles,” said Sirarpi Haykazyan, emphasizing that various programs are being implemented in different sectors, but visible results on air quality may be difficult to achieve in the short term.
