Approximately 200,000 Ukrainians May Lose Legal Status in the U.S.
Nearly 200,000 Ukrainians who sought asylum in the United States may be at risk of losing their legal status due to significant delays in processing applications for status extension. This has been reported by Reuters, referencing previously unpublished data from the U.S. government.
According to the source, since April 2022, around 260,000 Ukrainians have entered the United States under a humanitarian program initiated by the Biden administration. However, the processing of applications for legal status extension has faced serious delays dating back to the Trump administration, the effects of which continue to be felt today.
The data shows that since May 2025, U.S. authorities have processed only about 1,900 applications for citizens from both Ukraine and several other countries. This is considered an extremely low number given the tens of thousands of applications awaiting processing.
Immigration attorneys warn that the slowdown in the process could lead to mass loss of status, leaving Ukrainians at risk of deportation or illegal residency.
