European Powers to Insist on Review of Trump's Peace Plan, Says Bild
A number of European states are proposing to review several fundamental points of the peace plan suggested by U.S. President Donald Trump, as reported by Bild, citing diplomatic sources.
EU capitals are reacting negatively to the provisions regarding territorial division, which imply the full recognition of the Donetsk region and the inclusion of Crimea in Russia. The European stance continues to be based on the principle that borders cannot be changed by the use of force.
European governments are also expressing concerns about the reduction of the Ukrainian army as proposed in the plan. According to the source, limiting the army's size to up to 600,000 personnel could currently relate to security risks.
In several EU circles, it has been pointed out that violations of previously reached agreements diminish the credibility of such guarantees.
European officials also have reservations regarding proposals for the use of frozen Russian assets. According to the report, they oppose any mechanisms that could benefit Moscow, whether in the context of U.S.-led Ukrainian reconstruction projects or joint American-Russian initiatives.
