Regulator Chairman Discusses Changes in Electricity Tariffs

The Chairman of the Public Services Regulatory Commission (PSRC), Mesrop Mesropyan, addressed the risks that arose after the revocation of the license of the Electric Networks of Armenia (ENA), emphasizing that these risks are manageable. “These risks are manageable, and fortunately, it has been four months since the previous license was effective, but no one can prove that ENA is in a worse situation with the appointment of a new manager,” said Mesropyan, highlighting that those issues were raised during his recent visit to Turkey.

According to him, prior to the meeting, there were protests and flash mobs aimed at lowering the tariff, with some making incorrect statements that the Tashir company or ENA promised not to raise tariffs until 2031. “These are false inquiries. The entity that sets or reduces electricity tariffs in Armenia is exclusively the PSRC,” he noted, adding that the increase or decrease in tariffs depends on the particular financial year. “If any component can positively or negatively affect the tariff, the commission understands as a result whether it can lower the tariff or not,” he explained, mentioning that “we are currently in the process of reviewing electricity tariffs.”

According to Mesropyan, next year it is planned to keep the nuclear power plant under renovation for three months, meaning it will be out of operation for five months instead of two. It should be noted that the PSRC decided to revoke the distribution license of the ENA.
