Individuals Arrested for Circulating Counterfeit Banknotes
On November 12, the Community Police Department of Yeghegnadzor received operational information regarding a 43-year-old woman from Gyumri and a 28-year-old man from Nor Kharberd. They reportedly visited trading points in the Areni area of Vayots Dzor Province and the Surenavan village area of Ararat Province using a Ford vehicle to circulate counterfeit banknotes.
At 21:10, they were discovered and arrested at the 121st kilometer of the Yerevan-Meghri highway and were transported to the police station along with their vehicle. During a search, three 2,000 drams, six 5,000 drams, three 10,000 drams, 36 20,000 drams, 10 50,000 drams, and 10 100,000 drams counterfeit banknotes were found in the young man's backpack.
The young man stated that he acquired the banknotes from an online store. According to him, he made a purchase at the Surenavan filling station, paying with a counterfeit 20,000 dram note and receiving 18,000 drams in change. He also claimed to have paid with another counterfeit 20,000 dram note at a stall in Areni and received 18,000 drams in change, as well as paying with a counterfeit 20,000 dram note at another stall and receiving 12,000 drams in change.
Counterfeit banknotes were also discovered during the search of the woman. The man and woman, along with the seized counterfeit banknotes and prepared documents, have been presented to the Investigation Department of Vayots Dzor Province.
