EU Plans to Ease Data Protection Regulations for Artificial Intelligence Development

EU officials are considering the possibility of simplifying the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) to accelerate the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This was reported by the European publication Politico, referencing the draft legislation.

According to their information, relaxations are expected for companies working in the AI sector. These relaxations will allow them to legally process special categories of data, such as an individual's religious and political beliefs, ethnic origin, or health-related information. These changes will enable companies to more effectively train AI.

Additionally, the European Commission is planning to revise the definition of special categories of data that are subject to additional protection in accordance with privacy regulations. Changes relating to the concept of “personal data” are also anticipated, as pseudonymized data (a means of protecting personal data when real identifiers are replaced with artificial ones) do not always fall under GDPR protection.
It has been noted that rules regarding the use of cookie files may be simplified, allowing websites to gather more information about users.

According to Politico, Estonia, France, Austria, and Slovenia have opposed the GDPR amendment, while Germany supports the revision. The European Commission is expected to present the document on November 19, although changes may occur before that date.
