The Number of Accidents Increased Significantly in Armenia Due to Snowfall on January 16: Head of Traffic Police

Due to the snowfall on January 16, the number of traffic accidents in Armenia has significantly increased. The head of the RA Traffic Police, Egor Karapetyan, stated in an interview with "Haykakan Zhamanak" that on that day there were 199 traffic accidents.

The head of the Traffic Police noted that, for instance, on January 15, there were 107 accidents, on January 13, 130, and on January 12, 132 accidents. He also mentioned that there were no fatalities as a result of road accidents in the past five days.

When asked about the causes of the accidents, specifically regarding the lack of winter tires, Karapetyan responded, "There are various reasons; there is no specific single cause. Perhaps they did not have winter tires on, or maybe they did. It could be that the road was a bit icy, and the drivers were a bit careless in their driving."

Addressing the question about whether there is a legislative gap that allows drivers not to use winter tires in winter, the head of the Traffic Police replied, "The Traffic Police, the police, the Ministry of Emergency Situations, and various organizations consistently make announcements before winter, urging drivers to use winter tires. Some drivers listen, while others may either not have them or do not put them on."

He noted that there are currently many different legislative proposals being discussed within the Traffic Police, including a project regarding the mandatory use of winter tires during the winter.
