Symbol of War in Belgrade to be Replaced by Luxury Hotel
The Serbian Parliament has approved the demolition of the former General Staff building in Belgrade. The building, which was damaged by NATO strikes in 1999, has long been considered a significant example of Yugoslav modernist architecture. However, it has now lost its cultural heritage status, paving the way for a new investment project.
A luxury hotel is planned to be constructed on the site of the new complex, with a total estimated value of around $500 million. According to local media, the project is linked to the family of U.S. President Donald Trump. The construction will include 175 hotel rooms, approximately 1,500 apartments, and a special memorial corner.
The opposition has criticized the decision, deeming it disrespectful to the historic site. “In a place where bombs once fell, they now want to open champagne,” stated opposition representatives.
