The Situation is Indeed Crisis-Like: Pashinyan on Traffic Congestion

“I consider the situation to be truly crisis-like. I have seen it. It was strange to find myself stuck in traffic on a bicycle, making it difficult to move,” said Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, addressing the issue of traffic congestion in Yerevan.

“I have instructed the creation of a working group. First, we need to assess what the causes are. Yes, a traffic light can malfunction, there may be an accident, but, overall, the reason is the unprecedented volume of cars in Yerevan. And we need to understand how to deal with this phenomenon. It might also require some difficult solutions,” he noted.

Pashinyan pointed out that there is always room for technical adjustments. “But you understand, the number of cars is enormous and is increasing every day. Moreover, we are also making decisions to provide incentives for electric cars, which increases their numbers even more. We must understand that the capacities of Yerevan's streets are not unlimited. Of course, short-term solutions need to be found, while in the long term, we need to determine what to do,” emphasized Nikol Pashinyan.
