Zohra Mamdani Elected as First Muslim Mayor of New York City

In the local elections held on Tuesday in the United States, 34-year-old Democrat Zohra Mamdani has become the mayor of New York City.

Several states across the U.S. conducted elections for governorships, city mayors, and local governing bodies on Tuesday. Among the most significant outcomes was the victory of Mamdani in New York City. She is the first Muslim and the youngest mayor in the city's history in the past century.

According to preliminary results, Mamdani received nearly half of the votes from New Yorkers. The political figure, who identifies as a democratic socialist, campaigned on the idea of transforming New York into a city based on social equality. Her plans include freezing rents, launching free bus routes, opening supermarkets with city subsidies, and a range of other measures aimed at reducing living costs by raising taxes on the wealthiest segments of the population.

It is noteworthy that Donald Trump had announced he would cut New York’s funding if the Democratic candidate Mamdani were elected mayor.
