Latvia Delays Process of Exiting Istanbul Convention
Latvia has decided to postpone its exit from the Istanbul Convention, transferring the issue to the next discussion. The decision is based on widespread public protests that arose following the parliament's preliminary vote.
According to current legislation, new proposals can be submitted until November 1, 2026, after the parliamentary elections.
It is noteworthy that on October 30, Latvian deputies voted in favor of exiting the international agreement aimed at combating violence against women. However, President Edgars Rinkēvičs refused to sign the law on November 3, returning it for further review.
According to the constitution, if the parliament adopts the same bill a second time, the president can no longer block its enactment.
