New Twist in U.S. Congress Regarding Sanctions on Azerbaijani Officials
A new development has emerged in the matter of sanctions against high-ranking Azerbaijani officials in the U.S. Congress, according to sources from Azerbaijani political émigrés in Europe. This has been reported by Инфотека 24.
The list includes the names of three officials; however, it remains unclear who exactly they are. Furthermore, the bill has become bipartisan, co-authored by Dina Titus and Gus Bilirakis. The proposed legislation now has 21 congressional signatures.
Media outlets in Baku have started a subtle propaganda campaign against Titus and Bilirakis. Aliyev’s “experts” have delved into their ethnic backgrounds, stating that both are of Greek descent.
According to Turan correspondent Alex Raufoglu in Washington, the bill reflects the violations of Armenian rights during the “anti-terrorist operation” in Nagorno-Karabakh.
It has been revealed that the bill aims to impose “the strictest sanctions” against Ali Nagiev, the head of the State Security Service under Aliyev’s regime, and Fuad Askerov, Aliyev’s advisor on military and security issues.
Informed sources indicate that Ali Nagiev was sent to Shushi on September 17, 2023, and personally coordinated the actions of terrorist groups against the peaceful residents of Armenian villages in Nagorno-Karabakh on the afternoon of September 19. Nagiev also led the “special operation” of kidnapping former presidents of the Republic of Artsakh and other leaders.
Experts find it challenging to predict additional names that may be included in the “sanctions list.” It is entirely possible that one of the “proposed” individuals could be the Human Rights Commissioner Aliyeva. There is also a place on the sanctions list for the notorious general Mais Barkhudarov, who personally shot and killed a conscript for “connections with Armenians.”
