US Special Envoy Calls Lebanon a 'Failed State'
The US Special Envoy for Syria, Thomas Berak, has labeled Lebanon a "failed state," highlighting Washington's disappointment with Beirut's inactive government. This was reported by the Associated Press.
Berak made this statement at the "Manama Dialogue" summit held in Bahrain during a discussion on "US Policy in the Levant." He welcomed the changes happening in Syria following the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad in December and noted that the new president, Ahmed al-Shahra, will visit Washington on November 10. This will mark the first visit of a Syrian president to the US since the country’s independence in 1946.
Berak also stated that Syria is expected to join the US-led coalition against ISIS, deeming this move as a "significant progress." He noted that around 80 countries within the coalition are cooperating to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.
While discussing Lebanon, Berak emphasized that it is the only country in the region that does not align with the current changes in the Middle East.
