EU Expresses Anger at Merz Over Ukraine Issues

European Union diplomats have expressed that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz's publication in the Financial Times has created complications in the process of providing loans to Ukraine by utilizing Russia's frozen assets. This was reported by Euractiv, citing European sources.

According to the publication, Brussels was urgently trying to reach an agreement on providing financial support to Kyiv, but the process has come to a halt. Diplomats said that Merz's article published on September 25 changed the course of discussions. “This issue should have been discussed in a closed format, rather than being made public,” one of the Euractiv sources noted.

In the article, Merz proposed to provide Ukraine with a loan of around 140 billion euros based on the frozen Russian assets. He pointed out that this loan would only be repaid if Russia compensates Ukraine for the war damages. Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron stated that it is currently impossible to legally confiscate Russia's frozen assets.
