Supreme Court Appeal to be Filed Against Sentencing of Ashot Minasian
The commander of the Sisakan detachment, Ashot Minasian, will have a supreme court appeal filed against the decision of the Court of Appeals which sentenced him to two years of imprisonment. This information was provided by defense attorney Mihran Poghosyan to Pastinfo.
As previously reported, the Court of General Jurisdiction in the Syunik region, presided over by Judge Varsenik Melkonyan, issued a ruling on December 26, 2024, finding Minasian guilty on the charges against him and sentencing him to imprisonment for two years. Considering the time Minasian had already spent in detention, the final sentence was set at one year and ten months of imprisonment, which was conditionally not applied, with a probation period of one year imposed on Minasian.
Appeals against the judgment have been submitted. Minasian's defense requested the annulment of the first-instance court’s decision and the issuance of a court act of acquittal, while the prosecution demanded the annulment and requested a real imprisonment sentence of two years and six months for Minasian.
The Court of Appeals, presided over by Judge Sevak Hambardzumyan, with judges Armen Danielyan and Harutyun Petrosyan, published the final part of the ruling on September 1, partially overturning the first-instance court's decision. Consequently, the conditional release from serving punishment was revoked, and imprisonment was assigned as a sentence for one year and ten months.
More than a month after the ruling was issued, the prosecutor's office released a statement today regarding the decision. Interestingly, in the case of Jalal Harutyunyan's conviction, where the decision had not been executed for a long time, the prosecutor's office refrained from commenting, ignoring the requirements of the Constitution.
It is noteworthy that Ashot Minasian was initially accused of allegedly preparing to murder Nikol Pashinyan, a case that was terminated more than a year after its initiation.
