EU Statement Amid Intense Clashes in Syria
The European Union has condemned the attacks on the security forces of Syria's interim government, attributing them to supporters of former President Bashar al-Assad, and has called for the protection of the civilian population in Syria. This was stated in a release from the European External Action Service.
"The EU strongly condemns the recent attacks, which are allegedly carried out against the forces of the interim government by elements supporting Assad in the coastal areas of Syria, as well as any violence against civilians. Civilians must be protected under any circumstances, in accordance with international humanitarian law," the statement reads.
The EU has also urged external forces to respect Syria's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
It is important to note that the most significant clashes since the fall of Bashar al-Assad's regime have been recorded in Syria in recent days, resulting in hundreds of casualties. The clashes are primarily taking place in the Latakia province, where the Alawites, the backbone of Assad's power, are in large numbers.
