New Metro Station Opened in Tehran in Honor of Iran's Armenian Christian Community
A new metro station has been opened in Tehran in honor of Iran's Armenian Christian community, local media reports.
The Mariam-e-Moqaddas (Saint Mary) station is located just a few minutes' walk from the Saint Sarkis Church.
The modern Armenian diaspora in Iran has a history spanning approximately four centuries. Its formation is linked to both ancient migration processes and resettlements initiated by Persian rulers, particularly during the Safavid era.
According to official data, about 200,000 Armenians currently reside in the Islamic Republic of Iran. However, independent estimates suggest that the real number could be closer to 100,000, mainly due to waves of emigration, which were particularly intense after the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
Despite the decrease in numbers, the Armenian community maintains political representation; according to the Iranian Constitution, Armenians are allocated two seats in the Majlis.
