Yerevan is engulfed in smoke as people breathe in toxic air from the Nubarashen landfill

Smoke covers Yerevan as residents breathe in toxic air. Just a few kilometers from downtown Yerevan, Armenia's largest landfill, the Nubarashen waste site, has been on fire for the second day.

“Today, the wind brought the smoke this way; people are engulfed in smoke, inhaling toxic air, and an unpleasant odor is spreading,” citizens reported to Auroranews.

Recall that Yerevan's Mayor, Tigran Avinyan, stated in a video posted on his Facebook page that the fire was not accidental but deliberate. He informed that he had spoken with the Director of the National Security Service and the Minister of Internal Affairs, and that anyone connected to the fire would face the full force of the law.

The Mayor also noted that access controls at the landfill’s entrance and exit have been tightened, emphasizing that this year the first stage of a tender for a waste recycling plant will be announced, which will permanently close the chapter on the Nubarashen landfill.
