Armenia Must Value Relations with Russia but Establish a Second Ally Line: Narek Karapetyan

Armenia must place great importance on its relationship with Russia, but it should also establish a second ally line, as there may come a time when the main ally could present security issues for Armenia. This was stated by movement coordinator Narek Karapetyan during a press conference.

“Therefore, broader international alliances are acceptable for Armenia,” said Karapetyan. He pointed out that today representatives of the ruling political party, the 'Civil Contract,' present themselves as bearers of Western powers, because they have failed to create an advantage either in the north, south, or east.

“In the West, they have managed to hold several meetings. If the West can solve the economic issues for Armenia that it once addressed for countries like Slovakia and Poland, let’s sit down and discuss. Today the West is only showing us advertisements, but there’s 'nothing behind it,'” he noted.

Karapetyan is confident that the 'Civil Contract' party is incapable of providing such support for Armenia.

Regarding the statements from the Civil Contract about the opposition’s plans to create a 'Union State' with Russia, Karapetyan did not consider them realistic. “What theses should these people present against us? Opponents mainly come up with theses trying to scare the public. The Soviet Union has collapsed irreversibly, and the current society of the Republic of Armenia played a radical role in that. The national consciousness we have achieved will not allow the question of Armenia’s independence to be put into doubt. We oppose any term that concerns the loss of our sovereignty. We support only those directions of economic integrations that have been underestimated,” assured Karapetyan.
