Amsterdam on the Verdict of Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan
The sentencing of Archbishop Mikael Ajapahyan to two years of imprisonment is a deeply concerning matter. This was expressed by prominent lawyer Robert Amsterdam on his Facebook page.
“This case, where the charges are based on ‘public calls to seize power,’ is yet another proof that the judicial system in Armenia is being used against political dissent. The trial of Bishop Mikael, which he himself characterized as political persecution, highlights how fundamental principles of freedom of speech and fair trial are being violated. When a spiritual leader, who simply expressed his concerns about the fate of the country, is sentenced to imprisonment, it sends a signal to the entire society—do not criticize the authorities, no matter how many grievances and concerns exist,” he wrote.
The international community cannot remain indifferent to this blatant injustice. The authorities of Armenia must urgently review this verdict and ensure a fair trial in accordance with the European Convention on Human Rights. Justice needs to be independent, not a political tool,” he added.
It should be noted that Mikael Ajapahyan was sentenced to two years of imprisonment.
