Xi Jinping Demands Donald Trump Concede Taiwan
Chinese President Xi Jinping has demanded that U.S. President Donald Trump concede Taiwan as a condition for a trade agreement between the two countries. This was reported by The Wall Street Journal, citing government sources familiar with the negotiations.
The publication notes that under Biden's administration, the U.S. stance of not supporting Taiwan's independence is no longer sufficient for Xi.
Xi is now requiring Trump to officially declare his opposition to Taiwan's independence. According to the source, Xi plans to leverage the trade agreement negotiations with the U.S. as a means of pressure against the American president.
“The Chinese leader plans to exert pressure on his American counterpart to officially state that the U.S. is ‘against’ Taiwan’s independence,” The Wall Street Journal reported.
The meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping could take place during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in South Korea, which begins on October 31, 2025.
