EU Membership is Actually Vulnerable in Several Aspects: Suren Surenyants

Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced from the UN General Assembly podium that the law adopted in March this year regarding "the process of Armenia's membership in the EU" holds significant importance for the country. Political scientist Suren Surenyants shared this on his Facebook page.

“Pashinyan's European adventure is actually vulnerable in several respects:

  • The implementation of any law was not necessary to comply with EU standards. It was sufficient to carry out specific reforms such as an independent judiciary, anti-corruption measures, and a competitive economy. The law mentioned by Pashinyan is not a tool for meeting EU standards but rather a political declaration aimed at damaging relations with Russia and changing the country's strategic orientation.
  • There has been no signal from Brussels. The EU has never officially expressed its readiness to start the membership process for Armenia. Thus, Armenia is unilaterally adopting a law that has no practical consequences but deepens external political uncertainty.
  • This step does not strengthen Armenia; rather, it makes it more vulnerable. It creates a new crisis in relations with Russia without any guarantee that the EU is ready to take any real action.
  • For Pashinyan, European integration is merely a propaganda emphasis, not a real state strategy. For Armenia, this means not only a misguided orientation and uncalculated move but also an outright adventure that places the country in front of new risks,” he wrote.
