Trump Has Phone Conversation with Xi Jinping at U.S. Request
Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump had a phone conversation at the request of the American side, reports Xinhua. The Chinese embassy in the U.S. also released information about the discussion.
Reuters has reported that Trump and Xi will discuss the agreement for the transfer of control of the TikTok social media platform to American hands. U.S. authorities have long sought to ban TikTok because the platform is owned by a Chinese company. The U.S. government insists that its parent company, ByteDance, should transfer its American operations to local owners, citing concerns that TikTok's collection of user data poses a national security threat. The company has assured that it will not share this data with the Chinese government, even if Beijing demands it.
At the same time, China considers a ban on the social network in the U.S. preferable to the forced sale of the business. In January 2025, Trump demanded that ByteDance sell TikTok's American assets, threatening to block the app in the U.S. In response, TikTok limited access for U.S. users.
In July, Reuters reported that TikTok plans to launch a separate app for the U.S. audience with a distinct algorithm and data processing system. ByteDance subsequently denied these reports.
