Trump Wants to Bring American Troops Back to Afghanistan
U.S. President Donald Trump, highlighting the importance of the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, stated, "We are trying to bring it back. We need it. We want to bring that base back. One of the reasons we want to bring that base back is that it is one hour away from the place where China is producing nuclear weapons."
On the last day of his official visit to Great Britain, President Trump held a joint press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, making a significant announcement regarding Afghanistan. Trump declared that the Biden administration had exited Afghanistan in a "very bad" manner, leaving behind numerous issues, and that they are trying to rectify that.
Highlighting the importance of the Bagram Air Base, Trump further added, "While we are trying to bring it back. This could be a last-minute news. We need it. We want to bring that base back. One of the reasons we want to bring that base back is that it is one hour away from the place where China is producing nuclear weapons." Trump has previously claimed that they handed over the Bagram Air Base to Chinese control, blaming the Biden administration for this outcome.
Trump sought to retrieve the equipment that remained in Afghanistan. On August 31, 2021, the former president Joe Biden’s administration completed the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, leaving behind hundreds of American citizens, millions of dollars worth of equipment and weapons, as well as thousands of Afghans who had cooperated with the United States.
During his first cabinet meeting after taking office, Trump remarked, "We left behind equipment worth billions, even tens of billions of dollars, new vehicles." This equipment needs to be brought back. According to him, Afghanistan is selling U.S.-made equipment.
