I Wouldn't Envy Armenia's Next Leaders: Levon Ter-Petrosyan
The inevitability of Nikol Pashinyan's downfall, or why he despises history: this is what Armenia's first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan wrote on Facebook.
"I remind the reader of the well-known episode in the history written by Movses Khorenatsi, which relates to the king Artavazd's reproach during his father Artashes II's burial ceremony: 'While you were away and took my entire land with you, whom shall I reign over the ruins?'
(Movses Khorenatsi, History of Armenia, critical text and introduction by M. Abeghyan and S. Harutyunyan, translation, additions by A.B. Sargsyan, Yerevan, 1991, p. 191-192).
Translation: 'While you went and took my whole kingdom with you, over whom shall I reign on the ruins?'
The difference is that while Artavazd's father was destroying his own country, Pashinyan is personally carrying out the destruction of his own land. Undoubtedly, he is aware of the magnitude of the evil he has committed, reflected in his constant outbursts and the daily mudslinging and threats directed at his opponents. I certainly would not envy Armenia's next leaders, as Pashinyan has left behind such a heavy legacy that it is nearly impossible to escape from it. What has been said in the historical past about people like him and how they were treated is known to all.
I leave the interpretation of the historical parallels to the discernment of a serious reader," he wrote.
