New Agreement Between Tehran and IAEA

New Agreement Between Tehran and IAEA

The Supreme National Security Council of Iran has approved a new cooperation agreement between Tehran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), signed by the Agency's Director General Rafael Grossi and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Cairo.

“The text of the agreement's provisions has been reviewed by the Supreme National Security Council’s nuclear committee, and everything signed has essentially been approved by this committee,” a part of the statement cites NourNews.

As noted in the document, the committee is authorized to act and make decisions on behalf of the Supreme National Security Council on this matter.

It should be recalled that on June 25, members of the Iranian Parliament approved the text of a bill to suspend cooperation between the Islamic Republic and the IAEA. On July 2, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian signed the law. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, in turn, stated that the new law clarifies the framework for cooperation with the IAEA but does not completely close the avenues for collaboration and leaves the decision on this matter to the discretion of the Supreme National Security Council.

It is also noteworthy that on September 9, Iran and the IAEA signed an agreement in Egypt to resume cooperation that had been suspended following attacks by Israel and the United States in June, as the absence of condemnation from the IAEA against the countries that attacked nuclear facilities had drawn criticism in Iran. As explained by the Iranian Foreign Minister after the signing of the document, the new regulations on cooperation between Tehran and the Agency fully meet the demands of both sides. However, he added that if any hostile actions against the Islamic Republic resume, all communications with the IAEA will be suspended.
