Italy to Support Strengthening of NATO's Eastern Flank
Italy will contribute to the strengthening of NATO's positions on the eastern flank. This was reported by the newspaper La Repubblica.
Currently, the choice is between the Eurofighter and the F-35. These could be added to the four Italian aircraft already located at the Estonian base.
“Rome cannot remain on the sidelines in the face of efforts already declared by other European partners,” the message states.
In August of this year, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed to provide security guarantees to Ukraine without incorporating it into NATO. This was reported by the American agency Bloomberg.
Prior to this, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, announced that the EU, in conjunction with the United States, aims to provide Ukraine with guarantees similar to Article 5 of NATO's collective defense agreement. It is expected that if this decision is made, military assistance to Kyiv will increase.
Earlier, Italy's Defense Minister had questioned the sense of NATO's existence.
