We are Concerned About the Conservation of Lake Sevan, Says Minister of Territorial Administration
In July and August 2025, the average monthly flow in the Hrazdan River was recorded at 5.6 and 4 cubic meters per second, respectively, while the same indicators compared to 2024 were 6.7 cubic meters per second and 6.5 cubic meters per second.
This was stated by Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure David Khudatyan during a meeting. He noted, "Regarding the filling levels of large reservoirs, we see a very clear difference in indicators compared to the previous year. As of September 10, 2025, the filling level of relatively large reservoirs in the republic has reached 225 million cubic meters, which is approximately 140 million cubic meters less than the same period in 2024.
Based on the analysis of irrigation water demand, water sources, and the current situation, we have concluded that there is a need to extract an additional 30 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan," said the minister.
"I find it necessary to emphasize that we, like everyone else, are concerned about the conservation of Lake Sevan as a strategic water resource. However, due to the lack of other water sources in the intensively irrigated lands of the Ararat Plain, the need for this change has arisen," Khudatyan added.
It is noteworthy that the Parliament is discussing the issue of extracting an additional 30 million cubic meters of water from Lake Sevan for the purpose of providing irrigation water to agricultural enterprises during an extraordinary session.
