Cable Car Accident in Elbrus: Casualties Reported
Two people have died following a cable car accident on Mount Elbrus in the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic. The exact number of casualties is currently being confirmed, according to the press service of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic.
“Rescuers from the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations’ Elbrus high-altitude search and rescue team, along with all emergency services, have immediately gone to the scene. The modern cable car is undergoing scheduled maintenance from September 3 to 24 in preparation for the winter season,” the ministry reported.
The head of the republic, Kazbek Kokov, stated that the preliminary cause of the accident was the disconnection of a cable from one of the supports. He noted that rescuers are currently working at the site, and the bodies of the victims are being evacuated. He promised that all circumstances of the tragedy would be clarified by the relevant authorities.
Previously, the cable car had experienced a malfunction, causing individuals to fall from a height of 4-7 meters. It is known that there were 21 people on the malfunctioning cable car. Eight individuals have been injured, and one has been taken to intensive care.
