You are free in your positions: Baghdasaryan responds to Agnesa Khamaian
The candidate for the position of judge at the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation is Nelli Baghdasaryan. Her candidacy was presented at today's meeting of the National Assembly by the President of the Supreme Judicial Council, Arthur Atabekyan.
During her speech, the candidate explained why she aspires to be elected as a judge handling criminal cases at the Court of Cassation. She reminded the audience that she has 30 years of practical experience as a lawyer, having had the opportunity to examine numerous and diverse criminal cases, and more.
“I understand that the work of a judge at the Court of Cassation is complex and at the same time a responsible job, but I confidently declare that I can effectively utilize my extensive experience as a judge exclusively dealing with criminal cases in the crucial process of developing case law arising in light of legislative changes,” she said.
Member of the 'Armenia' faction, Agnesa Khamaian, inquired about the independence of judges, questioning how judges can be independent when the country's Prime Minister calls for blocking the entrances and exits of the judiciary, and in this context, she asked whether Nelli Baghdasaryan went to work that day or not.
“Judges are indeed independent, guided by laws and their inner convictions. You, as a representative of a political body, are free in your positions and inquiries, whereas I must adhere to the rules of my conduct. That is the status of a judge. Yes, I performed my work duties that day and attended work,” Baghdasaryan noted.
It should be reminded that the parliament is discussing the selection of judges for the vacant position in the Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation, candidates Luisa Abgaryan, Nelli Baghdasaryan, and Armen Dilyan.
