Global Increase in Nuclear Armament Reported Today: Grossi
The Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, has announced that there is not a trend of disarmament, but rather a global increase in nuclear armament today.
"Countries are developing and increasing their nuclear arsenals. At the same time, some countries without nuclear weapons are speaking more openly about the possibility—and even the necessity—of having such power. Our task should be to obstruct this trend," emphasized the IAEA head.
Grossi highlighted the importance of the Pope's calls for disarmament, noting that these should translate into concrete actions. According to him, this is the greatest challenge in the field of nuclear security to date.
The IAEA director also addressed the situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, stating that the facility continues to be under serious threat due to military operations.
Grossi found it encouraging that, at the Alaska summit, Russia and the U.S. have once again raised the issue of nuclear disarmament after a long pause.
