Home Arrest Imposed on Defendant for Brutal Assault on Lieutenant Colonel Ara Mkrtchyan
The measure of restraint applied to Harutyun Grigoryan, the defendant in the case of brutally assaulting Lieutenant Colonel Ara Mkrtchyan, has been changed. His lawyer, Levon Sahakyan, announced that Grigoryan has been placed under house arrest.
It is worth recalling that Harutyun Grigoryan was sentenced to five years in prison for the assault on the lieutenant colonel in Vayots Dzor. The verdict had entered into legal force. In February 2024, Grigoryan was conditionally released from prison. However, this judicial act was overturned by the appellate court, and Grigoryan was transferred back to prison to serve his sentence. Subsequently, the Supreme Court decided to send the case back to the court of general jurisdiction for the Ararat and Vayots Dzor regions for a new trial.
Concurrently, a decision was made to detain Harutyun Grigoryan. Earlier, it was reported that Lieutenant Colonel Ara Mkrtchyan had been brutally assaulted on September 18, 2019, in the yard of a building on Arsenyan Street in the town of Yeghegnodzor, Vayots Dzor. Relatives insist that Tigran Sargsyan was also directly involved in the violence against the lieutenant colonel, who subsequently announced his resignation from the position of governor due to this incident. On July 27, 2023, Lieutenant Colonel Ara Mkrtchyan passed away after being in a coma for nearly four years.
