Turkish Authorities Begin Constructing Shelters in Ankara
Turkish authorities have started constructing shelters in Ankara and several major cities for the population in the event of wars, disasters, and nuclear incidents. As reported by NTV, the project is being implemented by the state housing agency, and shelters will be built in all provinces of the republic.
The issue of strengthening civil defense measures has been raised in recent meetings of the Turkish government, chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. There has been an opinion that the existing shelters, most of which are basements of apartment buildings or multi-level underground parking lots, do not meet modern requirements for the protection of the population during emergencies.
In this regard, a decision has been made to update the infrastructure of shelters throughout the country, taking into account the regional characteristics of Turkey's location. It has been noted that there are risks of military operations, disasters, and other emergencies in the region. In particular, the shelters must also protect people in cases of surface radioactive contamination incidents.
The experiences of Israel, Japan, and Switzerland have been studied. Reinforced shelters that can withstand various types of significant external impacts will be constructed across the country. They are to be located in such a way that the majority of the population can quickly reach a safe zone.
