Azerbaijan to Expand Natural Gas Supplies to Nakhchivan via Iran

Azerbaijan has reached an agreement to expand natural gas supplies to Nakhchivan through Iran. Since the current agreement expires this year, a new deal has been signed by the parties, and the document is currently in the signing phase, SOCAR reported to Report.

The annual gas demand of Nakhchivan amounts to 260-300 million cubic meters. To meet this demand, Azerbaijan signed an agreement with Iran in 2005 based on a swap mechanism. According to the agreement, Iran supplies gas from Julfa to Nakhchivan, and in return, Azerbaijan receives the same volume of gas through Astara.

Regarding the Igdir-Nakhchivan gas pipeline, which was commissioned on March 5, SOCAR has announced that gas transportation through this pipeline has not yet commenced.
