Pentagon Plans to Deploy American Troops in Chicago
The Pentagon is developing plans to deploy American troops in Chicago as President Donald Trump announces a fight against crime, homelessness, and illegal immigration, reports The Washington Post.
The planning by the Department of Defense, which has been underway for several weeks, includes several options, such as mobilizing at least a few thousand National Guard personnel as early as September, according to the publication.
“There is total chaos in Chicago,” Trump stated to reporters on Friday, mocking the mayor for continuing his attacks on cities run by Democratic politicians. “And we will likely fix that next time.”
“We will not speculate on further actions. The department is an organization focused on planning and continually works with agency partner to develop programs for the protection of federal assets and personnel,” the Pentagon said in a statement.
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, whose state includes Chicago, announced that the federal government has not contacted the state to clarify whether it needs assistance. On Friday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed serious concerns over the implications of any illegal deployment of National Guard troops.
