Negotiations Cannot Be Conducted Under Bombs. The Main Question Lies Ahead - Macron

During negotiations held in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders discussed the issue of tightening sanctions against Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron informed journalists, according to TASS.

“As you understand, Trump may not want that, even if he has imposed what are called secondary sanctions on India for purchasing and processing Russian oil. I believe he wishes to make commitments, he sincerely believes that this could lead to results. However, a variant was discussed during the negotiations in which no results would be achieved, a variant in which Russia does not sincerely wish to participate in such a process. And at that moment he expressed his desire and willingness to impose what he calls primary and secondary taxes, but which we actually call sanctions,” said Macron.

He reminded that in the past, Trump was in favor of establishing a ceasefire before the start of negotiations, although he does not insist on that currently. According to the French leader, this is due to the U.S. President's confidence in the possibility of “quickly signing a peace agreement.”

Macron stated that during the negotiations at the White House, European leaders again insisted that “negotiations cannot be conducted under bombs,” especially considering that this process could take weeks. The French President also expressed concern: “A peace agreement concluded under such conditions will not last long, thus the main question was to reach an agreement on future security guarantees,” said the French President.
