Kaia Kallas on Current Relations Between Armenia and Azerbaijan
The European Union considers the agreements signed by the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in the presence of U.S. President Donald Trump on August 8 in Washington to be a significant advancement in resolving a conflict that has lasted for decades. This was stated by Kaia Kallas, the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
"We appreciate the efforts of both sides and the U.S. administration to seize this favorable moment and ensure progress. It will now be vital to ensure the timely implementation of agreed steps, particularly the signing and ratification of a peace treaty," the statement reads.
The high-ranking EU diplomat emphasized that this is an important and decisive step toward the full normalization of relations between the countries, based on mutual recognition of each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and inviolability of borders following the 1991 Alma-Ata declaration.
"Once implemented, the agreed steps are expected to have a positive impact on the overall peaceful development of the region and help bring communities divided by the conflict closer to sustainable peace and joint prosperity. The EU fully supports the Armenia-Azerbaijan resolution process and has been working for years with both sides and our international partners to create conditions for lasting peace. We remain prepared to cooperate with partners towards full resolution, providing additional support and advice, including for the practical implementation of the next steps," the statement concluded.
