Kamchatka Peninsula Moved Two Meters

Scientists at the Kamchatka branch of the Federal Research Center for Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences have conducted preliminary calculations based on the results of geodynamic observations. Following the powerful earthquake on July 30, the peninsula has shifted nearly two meters.

“It turned out that we all have moved quite a bit toward the southeast. The maximum displacements after the July 30 earthquake were observed in the southern part of the peninsula. There, they amounted to almost two meters, which is comparable to the horizontal displacements observed after the earthquake in Tohoku, Japan, in 2011,” the researchers stated.

It should be noted that on July 30, an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8 occurred near the shores of Kamchatka. It was the strongest since 1953.
