Amount of Meat Seized and Destroyed in Yerevan Recently

Recent results from the monitoring of meat in the market have shown that the Food Safety Inspection Body is decisively committed to preventing the sale of non-slaughterhouse origin meat. As part of biweekly monitoring, which also involved the head of the Inspection Body, a total of 1859.9 kg of meat was seized and destroyed in Yerevan alone.

In response to the requests of vendors dealing with meat sales on Khorenatsi Street in Yerevan (GUM market), the head of the Inspection Body, Tigran Petrosyan, met with their representatives. The butchers presented their issue, stating that they are ready to sell only slaughterhouse-origin meat, but the slaughterhouses are unable to supply the required quantities, forcing them to buy and sell meat from animals slaughtered in backyards.

They suggested finding a way for farmers to bring animals to slaughterhouses rather than calling someone to slaughter them in their yards. Mr. Petrosyan clarified that the responsibility for solving the issue lies with the sales points. "You should not accept meat from animals that have been slaughtered in backyards. This is undoubtedly the way to resolve the issue. If for just one week, the meat sales points comply with the legal requirements and only sell safe meat brought from slaughterhouses with proper documentation, the problem will be resolved. There is no alternative," emphasized the head of the Food Safety Inspection Body.

Monitoring over the origin of meat will continue not only in the stalls on Khorenatsi Street but throughout the republic. The Inspection Body urges operators to comply with legal requirements and advises consumers to purchase meat only after verifying its slaughterhouse origin.
