The Most Powerful Solar Storm Recorded in a Month and a Half

A powerful solar flare, the strongest in a month and a half, has been recorded on the Sun, reported Sergey Bogachov, head of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory at the Institute of Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences, to RIA Novosti.

According to him, the explosion occurred in the evening and had formed in the northern hemisphere of the planet just a day prior. This M2.9 (strong) level flare is the result of a significant increase in solar activity that began on August 1. Bogachov added that a larger event of this kind was recorded on June 20.

In the last three days, 35 flares have been registered on the Sun, but none reached the M level. “The location of the flare is almost directly on the Sun-Earth line, where such effects on the planet occur with the greatest efficiency. Updated information will be provided later,” the expert noted, calling attention to the continued risk of significant explosions in the next 24 hours.
