First Elections in Syria After Assad's Ouster

First Elections in Syria After Assad's Ouster

First elections will be held in Syria following the ousting of Bashar Assad, local media reports. From September 15 to 20, important elections for the National Council (Majlis al-Shaab), the local parliament, will take place, as reported by RIA Novosti, citing the head of the country's elected commission, Mohammad Tah al-Ahmad.

According to the plan, the People's Council of the Republic will include 210 parliamentarians. However, only two-thirds of these will be elected through public voting, while the remaining 70 will be appointed by the country's president. During this transitional period, the parliament will be responsible for shaping Syria's new legislation and will support the establishment of a permanent Constitution for the country.

It is noteworthy that during Bashar Assad's administration, elections to the People's Council in Syria were marred by numerous violations, with the dictator's party being declared the winner. The Syrian opposition and several Western countries have rejected the outcomes of these votes.
