US Needs to Create a Team of Negotiators for Ukraine Peace Talks: NYT
The administration of US President Donald Trump must form a professional team of negotiators for regular engagement with representatives from Moscow and Kyiv to achieve a successful resolution to the Ukraine conflict, according to The New York Times.
The publication emphasizes that a few phone calls and visits are insufficient to end the conflict. Historically, negotiations to resolve large crises have taken a long time and required diligent effort from all parties involved.
The paper recalls that the negotiation process for the 1998 'Good Friday' Agreement between Great Britain and Ireland, which allowed for the cessation of bloody clashes between supporters and opponents of Irish independence from the British crown, took nearly two years. Similarly, the armistice that ended the Korean War (1950-1953) was reached after 575 meetings over the span of two years.
