Rebooting France and Germany's Relations in a Complex Phase
French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, who are set to meet this evening in Berlin, may encounter some difficulties due to certain insurmountable disagreements. This was stated in an interview with Politico by Franco-German response expert Jacob Ross.
“The Chancellor of Germany and the President of France are faced with a dilemma. Each of them will have to sacrifice their successes in domestic politics to achieve success in foreign policy,” he noted.
The publication points out that Macron and Merz already face a number of irreconcilable disagreements on various issues. In particular, in the defense sector, Paris and Berlin have previously failed to sign an agreement on the joint development of a next-generation fighter jet, as well as to reach an agreement on the supply of American weapons to Ukraine.
