Macron Cannot Run for French Presidency in 2027

French President Emmanuel Macron has clarified his intention to maintain influence in the country's politics after his second term, not ruling out the possibility of running for president again, as allowed by the constitution.

“I still need your support, and I rely on you over the next two years... five years from now, ten years from now. You will be here, and you can be sure that I will be with you,” Macron stated during an event commemorating the 10th anniversary of the youth movement that helped him win his first presidential election on Sunday.

According to the French constitution, Macron cannot run for a third consecutive term in 2027. However, this limitation only applies to successive mandates, allowing him the opportunity to run for the presidency again in 2032 when he will be 54 years old.

Although Macron stated during a major television show in May that he was “not yet thinking” about a third term, it was later revealed that the government commissioned a public opinion survey the day after the interview to assess the French response to Macron's potential candidacy in 2032. According to parliamentary committee data, such surveys are typically not initiated by the Élysée Palace, but their results are conveyed to the president.

Currently, Macron's level of public trust is nearing a historical low, with only 22% of the French expressing confidence in his governance, according to the latest data from Elabe sociologists. The president’s domestic political influence has also weakened since his decision to hold early parliamentary elections last summer. His coalition subsequently lost control of parliament, leading to a prolonged political deadlock.
