What Changes are Planned in the Language Law

“This is an issue whose lack of regulation we see through practical problems arising in various sectors, which can even create certain obstacles for the state in strategic directions,” said Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sport Zhanna Andreasyan at a regular meeting of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Education, Science, Culture, Diaspora, and Youth Affairs.

She presented a draft amendment to the “Language Law,” which had earlier received approval at a government meeting. According to Andreasyan, the changes are significant and aimed at regulating the language and consolidating institutional mechanisms.

One of the most critical issues is the regulation of translated and borrowed concepts and special names in state documentation and legislation. The proposed draft also includes a change in the definition of “regulating literary Armenian,” incorporating the expression “legalization of active parallel usages” in addition to the previously established definition.

The Minister highlighted that in the next phase, much more substantial changes would be introduced to the Language Law, which will stem from the concept of linguistic policy. Referring to initiatives that started last year, Andreasyan announced that work is underway for launching a new program titled “Armenian for Non-Armenians: A System for Teaching, Testing, and Assessing the Armenian Language.”
