Renovation of Old Buildings Will Be Prohibited in Yerevan, Says Avinyan
The owners of old buildings in Yerevan will be required to maintain their proper appearance. In particular, renovations of these buildings or voluntary changes to their facades will be prohibited. This was stated by Yerevan Mayor Tigran Avinyan during the preliminary discussions on the annual report on the implementation of the Republic of Armenia's 2024 state budget in the National Assembly.
According to him, such a provision is included in the new edition of the 'Law on Local Self-Governance,' which is currently being discussed in the government and will soon be presented to the parliament. Specifically, he noted that the renovation of these buildings or voluntary changes to their facade will be restricted.
'If the law is adopted, we can obligate property owners to maintain not only the appearance of the buildings but also many other necessary parameters,' Avinyan said. He pointed out that a significant number of historic buildings in the small center of Yerevan have been demolished over the years, replaced by multi-story buildings, while some are in emergency condition.
