Iran's Foreign Ministry on the Opening of the 'Zangezur Corridor'
Iran has decisively and quickly thwarted the opening of the 'Zangezur Corridor'. This was stated by Ali Akbar Velayati, advisor to the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in an interview with KHAMENEI.IR.
"If we look at historical realities, we can confidently say that since the acceptance of Islam, Iran has never been as powerful, independent, and influential as it is today. One of the most vivid signs of this power was Iran's swift and decisive response to the South Caucasus crisis. When certain countries attempted to connect Nakhchivan to Azerbaijan under the pretext of creating the 'Zangezur Corridor' — a project that would essentially mean the fragmentation of Armenia and the blockage of the Iranian corridor to Europe — Iran vigilantly and decisively opposed this plan and thwarted its implementation," Velayati said.
According to him, Iran has prevented this action independently, even without Russia's assistance. "This demonstrates that Iran, even without Russia's support, managed to maintain security in the South Caucasus region through intelligent diplomacy and prevent NATO's penetration. Iran's skilled and strategic presence in the South Caucasus protects not only national interests but also serves as a strong barrier against external interference in the region's affairs," he added.
Velayati underscored that the ultimate goal of adversaries regarding the 'Zangezur Corridor' was not only to cut Iran off from the northern direction but also to create an encirclement around Russia from the south. However, this project has also failed. "Today, Iran occupies a central position in the emerging new world order," he emphasized.
